Rural Housing Programme
The Rural Works Department, in addition to its routine activities, undertakes construction of different types of residential and non-residential housing, such as RCC type, semi-permanent type/hill type, MIBT buildings in far-flung villages for its own use as well as for other sister departments namely, Agriculture, Horticulture, Police, Industry, Veterinary, Education, Fishery, Tourism, Social Welfare and Child Development.
Under the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the department extends constructional assistance to economically weaker sections of the tribal society in the form of distribution of CGI sheets for roofing their dwelling habitats. This has been felt necessary because of the poor longevity of thatch roofing conventionally used by the local community. At present, CGI sheets worth Rs 15,000 are distributed per family for the roofing of their dwellings.
Until recently, this programme covered construction of staging huts at the District headquarters/administrative circle for boarding and lodging. This has, however, been suspended since 1998-99. |
